PETtrac has it's own dedicated website with more information to assist pet owners, vets, dog wardens and rescues.
What is the AVID MicroChip and how does it work?
The AVID MicroChip is a tiny computer chip which has an identification number programmed into it. The chip is encased in a strong bio-compatible glass, and is small enough to fit into a hypodermic needle. Once the chip has been implanted, the unique number can identify your pet throughout their life. This identification cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed.
A special scanner is used to send a radio signal through the skin of the animal to read the chip. The animal feels nothing as the scanner is passed over him and the chip is read. The MicroChip number is then relayed to the scanner where it is displayed.
How long does the AVID MicroChip last?
The MicroChip itself has no power supply to replace or moving parts to wear out, and therefore it can be expected to last decades, well beyond the lifespan of your pet. With an AVID MicroChip you can be sure that the many years of experience in the industry are helping to improve our products all the time, therefore ensuring the highest quality products reach our customers.
Why should I get my pet MicroChipped?
MicroChips provide a permanent, non-changeable or removable means of identification that will not be lost over time, as can occur with tags and tattoos. Owner information is immediately accessible, ensuring the rapid return of a lost pet, avoiding delays, which can be found with other methods of identification.
In the UK it is however, a requirement that your dog wears a tag bearing your address details. AVID supply high quality engraved brass collar tags which are automatically inscribed with the freephone contact telephone number for our PETtrac database.
Does my pet have to be sedated for the injection?
No, injecting the AVID MicroChip is just like any other injection or vaccination.
Could my pet be allergic to the AVID MicroChip?
The AVID MicroChip is inert and biocompatible. There is virtually no chance of the body developing an allergy or trying to reject the MicroChip after being properly implanted.
Can a MicroChip move?
AVID MicroChips are coated with Parylene C, which is vacuum-deposited polymer. This coating once in contact with the body fluids, forms a small layer of connective tissue around the MicroChip, preventing movement of the chip.
Other contributing factors include the implant technique and the individual animal itself. AVID includes implant technique documentation with each MicroChip sold to help increase stability of the MicroChip within the animal's body.
At what age can a pet be MicroChipped?
Puppies and kittens can be identified anytime from 8-12 weeks old.
If your pet is not a dog or cat, then you should consult your local vet or contact us for further information.
Is the AVID MicroChip suitable for the Pet Travel Scheme?
Yes, the AVID MicroChip is suitable for the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS).
AVID supplies different MicroChip standards around the world, depending on the location and market type. Any MicroChip can be used for the Pet Travel Scheme provided that a scanner is available to be able to read that MicroChip at the point of entry into the country.
Within the UK, AVID supplies ISO standard MicroChips suitable for use within the UK and Europe - if your pet will be travelling outside of Europe then you should check with AVID for the appropriate standard MicroChip to be supplied to you.
How does a vet, rescue centre or dog warden reunite me with my pet?
Once your pet has been scanned and a MicroChip number found, an authorised user simply contacts AVID to retrieve your details.
An authorised user can access data 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year via our freephone number (0800 652 9 977) to obtain your information - all calls are answered by trained reunification personnel, not a call centre.
In August 2003, AVID launched the ground-breaking SMS reunification service, TEXTtrac. This allows authorised personnel to register their mobile phone and then text the MicroChip number to AVID; an automated service then sends the owner's details back to the phone in 15-20 seconds!
In 2013, AVID launched the first app for searching for pet MicroChip details, giving even greater access to the PETtrac database for authorised organisations and individuals.
Is there a charge for updating registration details?
Your pet is automatically registered on the PETtrac Database FREE of charge when your pet is MicroChipped, for the lifetime of your pet.
If you wish to register a change of address or keepership a charge will be applied. It is very important that PETtrac has your up-to-date contact information so that we may reunite you and your pet as quickly as possible!
For a one-off fee of £16.95, you may join PETtrac Plus, one of the benefits of this scheme is that you do not pay a charge to amend your contact information.
